Hadouken: Street Fighter Podcast #22 featuring iloveu and Sweet Johnny Cage

ect-goldred2Part of the reason I’m in New York right now is for EC Throwdown, so I thought what better guests for this episode of the podcast than the organizers of EC Throwdown themselves, iloveu and Sweet Johnny Cage. iloveu, who you may know as one of the east coast’s best players (he uses Sagat), is also featured in the I Got Next documentary. Sweet Johnny Cage has been running tournaments here in NY for years and is making a big splash with this major.

After we talk about the tournament, I talk Sagat with Joe.  Topics covered include:

  • Sagat’s wakeup game
  • Changes to Sagat with the new update
  • Coming out to California
  • I Got Next
  • Input shortcuts

Hadouken: Kickass Street Fighter Shirt

scottind, who you know from producing all of the Arcade Infinity Ranking Battle videos, just let me know about a pretty cool SF-related t-shirt from SplitReason.com.  It’s got a lot of the original SF cast as merchandise.  It has Chun Li as an alarm clock and Bison as a lamp.  Too good!  Anyways, just thought you guys might like to check it out.

Hadouken: Gamestop Street Fighter 4 Coverage

gamestop27

The Gamestop Finals this weekend, as I’m sure you’ve come to see by now, were a HUGE deal.  Probably a way bigger deal than anybody thought they were going to be at the start of all this Gamestop hoopla (conflicting tourney days, no sticks allowed, etc), so congrats to Justin Wong for taking it!  Everybody who wasn’t there really, really missed out.  But the good news is, there is some really good coverage of the event out there.

Also, just wanted to give a quick shoutout to to the geniuses at The Marketing Arm, who is the company that put together the entire event (as well as the Gamestop Citywalk tournament back in February).  Mark, Josh, Melissa and John all did an absolutely fantastic job of not only putting together an amazing event, but also working with a bunch of SF4 goons like myself, so big thank yous to them for taking care of me and everyone else this weekend.  The choices they made with the accommodations (Sheraton at Fisherman’s Wharf) as well as flying out Daigo, Iyo and Pungko just go to show that they really did their homework on this community and went all out to put together an amazing event that everyone will remember for years to come.  Also, if you didn’t hear, the event raised $4,000 and 500 lbs. of food for the Second Chance Harvest Food Bank.  THIS IS STREET FIGHTER 4!

Coverage

EventHubs has a really good breakdown of the results and also included some pictures from my Twitter feed so thanks to them for the link back!

Kineda has some great-looking photos of the event (including the one you see above) and also has videos of the finals (Justin Wong vs. Mike Ross), as well as the exhibition matches between Justin, Daigo, Iyo and Pungko.  Enjoy!

UPDATE:

Pixelated Geek has more good coverage from an actual girl!  Wow!  Girls like SF4 too!  I think they have the only picture I’ve seen of Daigo actually smiling.  Also a huge picture of the big ass trophy Justin won.  Thank you Kyle aka Coyotegrey from Minnesota, who was also one of the Top 16 Finalists, who sent me the link and was one of the cool guys I met this weekend.

Seth at Capcom Unity has a good writeup as well as the international exhibition round robin results in grid format and a kickass gallery.

Hadouken: Street Fighter Tribute Art Exhibition – Saturday April 25 – Alhambra, CA + Podcast

jab-strong-fierce-flyer-small

This Saturday, April 25th in Alhambra, CA, Gallery Nucleus is hosting a Street Fighter Tribute Art Exhibition called Jab Strong Fierce and there is a tournament with $800 in cash prizes! Just take one look at the poster designed by Gallery Nucleus’ own Ben Zhu. The art exhibit features over 40 artists with original Street Fighter inspired artwork. This is not just artwork from the game (although I’m sure there will be some), these are real artists putting out legit Street Fighter artwork. I love the idea and the concept and talked with Ben a couple of weeks ago before Bar Fights and he told me what they are planning for this event and I’m all for it! This is exactly what we need right now, expanding the SF culture!

The exhibit will run from April 25 to May 11, but you really want to be there on opening night because there will also be a tournament! 1st place is $500! There is a $35 registration fee, which may sound steep to you, but $500 is a pretty hefty prize so I think it’s worth it. You are able to bring your own sticks, so don’t worry about that.

If you think that flyer image is as cool as I do, then you’re in luck because I got Ben to send me a hi-res version suitable for printing! Click here to download it.  Click here for more info on the event as well as to sign up for the tournament!

Also, I did a special short podcast with Ben, so give it a listen! We talk about all the details about the event, how it came to be, how the artists were chosen, etc.

Hadouken: Gamestop Street Fighter 4 National Finals San Francisco Trip Day 1

Right now I’m in my hotel room at the Sheraton at Fisherman’s Wharf, blogging from my iPhone because all if my stuff is still with Magus1234, one of NorCal’s finest players, who was kind enough to pick me up from the airport last night and show me around for a bit.

We got some games in at his place while we waited for Ed Ma to arrive because he flew in a few hours later than me due to work. For those who didn’t hear, I’m up here for the finals as a spectator because I got peaced out of round 2 of the GS tourney. I won a tourney at universal citywalk a while back and the prize was air, hotel, and some spending cash for me and a guest, so I dragged Ed up here with me and here we are.

After we got Ed, we headed to Keystone II, which is a secret arcade at Albert’s house (yes, it’s in his backyard) where all the NorCal pros train on Friday nights. It was poppin and definitely the place to be last night. It’s not exactly open to just anybody, so I’m grateful to be welcomed into the heart of NorCal. Thank you Albert for having us, you were right, we are boys now!

Lots of big names spotted at Keystone II last night including Mr. Wizard from SRK, Seth Killian from Capcom, John Choi, Ricky Ortiz, Rom (winner of 3rd Strike at California Regionals), Gamestop finalists Justin Wong and Mike Ross, as well as Korean national champion Pungko!

For those who have been reading my site for a while, you may remember that I blogged about one of his videos months ago, where he was tearin it up against some Dhalsim player. Some people claimed he wasn’t that good at the time, but now he’s the national champ and he personally beat me down last night, so I can tell you firsthand that he is the real deal. Special thank you to Sean, who volunteered to be Pungko’s translator for the weekend.

Anyways, so we all partied pretty hard at Keystone last night (including Pungko!) and now I’m waiting for everybody to wake up and for Magus to get here with my stuff so I can change out of these clothes.

The finals start in seven hours so be there if you are in the area and feel free to come say hi if you see me!
