Hadouken: Buying an arcade stick? A warning.

First of all, do not let this post dissuade you from buying a stick. They will help you in the long run.

My first SF game was HD remix, and I bought and have been playing SFIV since launch. As I started messing around with FADC combos and such, I realized that the xbox 360 controller wasn’t going to let me improve beyond the point I had reached. I called around, found a place that had the TE sticks in stock (strangely they had many of them), and took the hour long drive to go get one. What followed is the worst week of video game playing I’ve ever experienced. Pretty much all muscle memory I had is worthless now. I struggle with of Akuma’s BnB combos that I could easily pull off with the controller. Once I finally started hitting the combos again, I went online and was raped. Training mode only helps so much…..actual fights against real players are so much different. I also play as seth some…..OMG I CAN NOT GET OUT THAT ULTRA! Every single time I attempt his ultra or super I end up teleporting instead. Since I bought the stick all of my online wins have come from using Seth’s vast array of gimmicks, such as the teleport>throw.

This week was the first time I’ve ever rage quit during a match. I was eating Ken’s srk over and over and mentally I knew what should be doing….but my hands weren’t up to the task.

If you’ve never used a stick and are planning on buying one…beware. Much rage will overcome you.

Hadouken: “…Doing the same shit, over and over again!”

This is a comment someone vocally used over their microphone during a Championship match out of frustration… At the time I found it quite amusing, but being the sensitive chap that I am, I re-watched the fight a few times a day or two later to really see if I was doing something lame.

(NOTE: Contains scrubbery and best avoided by players who like a dose of skill with their SF4 viewing).

First of all, I’ve fought Chun-Li (as Boxer) about 5 times in total over my 1.5 weeks of playing and I confess I lost the majority of them for being overly aggressive and relying on her low-stamina (Yaarrgghhh I’ll just throw a few dash punches/headbutts and it’s easy winning – Oh darn, I’m losing!), usually ending up with me eating silly damage then being forced to try (and often fail) puncturing a turtle for the trouble, so when it came to this one I said meh, time to be a bit patient.

As a Keyboard user I can’t throw out super-skilled mega combos so there’s quite a lot of Jab-Spam into Dash-Punch and I guess I overuse Headbutt a little but other than that I can’t see myself doing anything… Offensive?

At the end of the day I don’t lose sleep over SF4 but it is a big curiosity of mine as I find the reaction and opinions of other players plays a big part of my style and choice to play the game (heck, I bought this game due to being influenced by movies of tournies and players in the first place), so hearing something like that during the fight threw me off a little as I honestly thought I (apart from being nubbish and making many errors) was doing alright for someone of barely average skill.

In the event nobody can be bothered with the movie or cares much for the topic, does anyone have any worthwhile advice for Boxers contending with the aggravating poke’n'prod turtling of Chun-Li (or pokers in general – Vega comes to mind) as I find I lose patience with them VERY quick and end up just dashing in to my own demise for the sake of ending the misery a bit quicker.

Any advice welcome and appreciated in advance.
