Hadouken: Street Fighter 4 Skill Curve – Question for the Pros

In your honest opinion, is there a larger skill curve in Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike or in Street Fighter 4?

I think the skill curve in SF3 is much higher, primarily due to the fact that simply mastering link timing (very difficult but a matter of practice, anyone can do it) will allow you to compete effectively at a very high level in SF4, whereas you can master all the combos you want in SF3 and still get destroyed over and over by high level players… especially certain Japanese players (Nuki, Tokido, etc.) Among other reasons.. of course, what are the pros’ thoughts?

Our
resident combo-master
Derek
has spent more time scrapping Spyborg’s bots than perhaps
anyone alive, so we asked him to drop a little science on
how to rack up massive combo bonuses in our new
brawler.

What’s
that? Combos? That’s right–Spyborgs
has em in spades (after each hit, you have a window of
time to continue with another hit to extend your
combo). While noobs might be able to mash their
way through most situations, more discerning players can
find ways to score 100+ hit combos with a little
creativity and some old-school arcade
chops.

Read on for Derek’s
behind-the-scenes tips and tricks!

PS- once the game comes out, if you can beat
Derek’s current record of 350 hits, record it, send to
me, and I will shower you with prizes…

–Clan is the best
at generating high combo scores, because she does the
least damage. Since she has to hit the enemies
more in order to kill them, she can rack up higher combos
than the other two characters.
Similarly, you get better combo scores using weak attacks
instead of heavy attacks.

–Destroying crates and
other objects in the environment also adds to your combo
score. Make sure to keep your combo going by
destroying objects in the environment whenever enemies
are not available.

–Stinger’s gun can be
used to shoot objects and enemies across a gap from you,
allowing you to keep your combo going even when there are
no enemies or other objects in reach.

Hadouken: My self training – Scrubs to the Winners Club style

This is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down. I’d like to take a minute, just to say more, about how I became my scrubbiest in Street Fighter 4.

So, let’s do a brief run through of my plight. I always LOVED to play fighters (CvS2, Marvel 2, Etc, etc) but it was in Guilty Gear that I really started to do tourneys and traveling for matches. I’ve always done fairly decent then girls, work, school and worst of them all World of Warcraft started to take precedence. After a few years I quit WoW, remorseful of the lost time I coulda spent going pro style instead wasting them on WoW. Most skill gone but I can still hold my own. I decide to come back in when SF4 hit shelves, still focusing on Guilty Gear but when I went to Evo ’09 I was decimated at SF4. I am freakin’ terrible, balls terrible. But I wasn’t exactly depressed because of it, instead I was inspired. Even more inspiring is the community as a whole, the feeling of being there with so many people on the same page. I decided refocus and come back full force into the fighting game scene with twice the fervor as before. I figure I entered GG the same way, so starting all over isn’t so foreign.

Getting really into Street Fighter 4 I’ve been studying vids, frame data, listening to Gootecks, etc then I heard Gootecks’ SF4 podcast regarding his "From Scrubs to the Winners Club" tips and tricks and how he was working with those two dudes. I took everything down word for word and so begins the madness today. A friend and I are looking to hit arcades now, we’re about an hour away from Denjin and about an hour and a half from Arcade Infinity.

I’m sure I’m not the first to try this out like this but the reason for this posting is so I may run things by you fellows to help me out with my notes. Also, maybe to meet fellow like minded people or people much better than I in and around the area so we may get together and I can pick their brain and get some hands on tips or simply matches.

So if you’re looking for some scrub Sagat destruction you can hit me up on the XBL tag FinalStarscream. It’s the only thing I got for matches at the moment but it’s better than nothing. Good luck dudes, see you on the battlefield.
